The photon grenade is a short range weapon intended for general use against a variety of targets. The grenade can be fired from a standard tube launcher, beamed to the required co-ordinates, or thrown by hand - although the latter is only suitable for grenades on a low yield setting due to the proximity of the user to the detonation.

On detonation the photon grenade generates a powerful electro-magnetic pulse who's effects depend on the precise configuration of the weapon used. The standard Starfleet issue photon grenade has twenty yield settings. Low settings overload the nervous systems of Humanoid life forms near to the detonation point, resulting in immediate unconsciousness. At medium settings all life forms in the immediate area of the detonation will be killed, while a Setting 20 detonation will result in wide area destruction.
