...but is pulled inexorably inside.
 

Picard kills his duplicate as the vortex rages in the back
 

Finally, Captain Picard decided that to break the loop he must
do the exact opposite of what seemed to be right - so he sent the
Enterprise straight into it. The ship passed through harmlessley.
