Decades in the future, Jake Sisko recieves a visit from a young woman
curious to know why he stopped writing after only one or two books. Slowly,
he recounts his life story; when he was a teenager his father Benjamin
was apparently killed during an emergency on the Defiant. When Sisko started
reappearing months and years later, it transpired that he was stranded
in some type of subspace, periodically being pulled to Jakes location for
a few minutes before returning again. Jake tried for decades to find a
way to return his father for good, giving up his career and family in the
process. After the woman leaves, Jake recieves a final visit from his father;
Jake tells ben that the only way to cut the bond between them and return
him to the scene of the accident is to take his own life while they are
together - and Jake has already taken a dose of poison. As Ben watches
his son die, he finds himself once again on the Defiant where he manages
to avoid the energy discharge.
I was tempted to say damn the system and give this one a six out of
five. It really is that good.
